Empat belas tahun yang lalu Sacha Baron Cohen mengenalkan karakter aneh bin nyentrik bernama Borat ke seluruh dunia. Borat memutuskan untuk berpetualang ke Amerika untuk mempelajari berbagai macam budaya & bahasa orang Amerika.

Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan tidak hanya memenangkan Cohen sebagai Pemain Aktor Komedi terbaik di Golden Globe tahun itu tapi skripnya juga sekaligus masuk Oscar. Film Borat juga sampai masuk ke asia dan ke di Indonesia loh.
Awal diluncurkannya film ini mendapatkan banyak pujian dari kalangan kritikus film dan penonton Amerika Serikat. Namun bagi pengamat film asal negara-negara Arab dan Kazakhstan yang merasa kalau sosok ini adalah sebuah pelecehan.
Gurauan Borat memang sensitif banget, seolah menjadikan sosok orang Kazakhstan sebagai orang yang udik dan enggak berpendidikan.

Untuk menjalankan misinya, Borat menumpang kapal kargo dan akhirnya tiba di Texas. Tanpa diduga, ia begitu terkenal layaknya selebriti dan semua orang mengenalinya.
Bagian terbaik dari Borat adalah bagaimana Cohen sebagai kreatornya (dia tidak hanya membintangi tapi juga jadi produser, penulis skrip dan ide cerita) menunjukkan kepada penonton (khususnya penonton Amerika) bahwa orang-orang Amerika adalah orang-orang yang agak hipokrit.
Dibuat dengan konsep mockumentary, film Borat pada 2006 seolah terasa nyata. Borat bertemu dengan banyak orang di gay parade, bikin ribut dengan menyanyikan plesetan lagu kebangsaan Amerika Serikat, hingga mengejar cinta Pamela Anderson setelah menonton serial Baywatch.
Sebelumnya film itu dilarang di Kazakhstan, dan ketegangan meradang ketika Komite Olimpiade Asia salah memainkan lagu kebangsaan Kazakhstan versi lelucon Borat saat atlet negara ini meraih medali emas dalam Olimpiade Kuwait. Namun gara-gara film ini, pariwisata negeri itu meningkat bahkan, hingga 10 kali lipat.
Butuh enam tahun bagi pejabat negeri ini untuk mengakui Borat. Film itu kini dianggap ‘pahlawan’; membantu menempatkan negara kaya minyak di bekas Uni Soviet ini pada peta. Di depan parlemen, Menteri Luar Negeri Yerzhan Kazykhanov memberikan pujian. Dengan rilis film ini, jumlah visa yang dikeluarkan oleh Kazakhstan tumbuh sepuluh kali lipat.
